Is Singapore Math Better?

Singapore Math is one of the subjects that parents buzz about once their child hits school-age. It draws on the best practices from around the world and uses problem-solving as the focus of mathematical learning. In New York City, private and public schools alike such as Avenues, Hunter College Elementary School, and P.S. 132 in Williamsburg, have already adopted the Singapore Math program and utilize its methods in their curriculum.

But how did this become the ’next-big-thing’ in the education world and, how can it be better than other Math programs?

Singaporean Math has become popular due to Singapore’s consistent top ranking on an international assessment of student Math achievement. Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) released the results of its 2015 global rankings on student performance in mathematics, which showed that Singapore was ranked #1 while United States ranked #41, below the OECD average.

With the help of our teachers and our curriculum specialists from Teachers College Columbia University, we closely analyzed and compared Singapore Math with the New York Common Core Curriculum. Below, we listed the reasons why we think it's better than the current New York standard:

  1. Singapore Math is more advanced in promoting problem-solving skills that are relevant to a child's life experiences. It is proven that most children benefit from this approach.

  2. Singapore Math strongly promotes mastery through repetition and not memorization. It is more focused on working on the right building blocks and practicing until the child masters the fundamentals.

  3. It promotes self-regulation skills. The teaching guide stresses the importance of encouraging the students to highlight the why’s and how’s of the math problems. This enables children to critically reflect on their learning, apply, and self-direct.

At Dearest, with the help of experts in the field, we have designed the ‘Dearest Math curriculum’ for 1-5 year olds using the methods that made Singapore Math widely successful. All our modules are interactive and non-screen based. The activities promote problem-solving and are structured in the order that build a strong base for future math learning. We also promote repetition with a tool for our educators to guide the students to mastery. For more info on how Dearest can help your child develop the skills it promotes, email us at
